Public Health Nutrition

Aim of our groups is to evaluate associations between diet and lifestyle and risk of the metabolic syndrome and associated chronic diseases, in particular type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis. The research concept is based on the assumption that interaction between genetic factors and lifestyle plays a central role in the development of these diseases. Our research uses different methodological approaches to investigate dietary exposures ranging from overall dietary patterns to biomarkers of nutrient intake. Prospective cohort studies with biological samples are particularly valuable in this context as they provide data on food consumption and nutrient intake along with genetic and metabolic risk factors measured prior to the development of the disease of interest. We also base the development of complex prediction models on such studies, which aim to identify high-risk individuals for prevention interventions or clinical studies.
